If 2004 was the year of pop-up blocking for the masses, then 2005 will become the year of ad blocking for the masses...
Here's how to block ads in Mozilla Firefox.
1. Download and install the Adblock extension by The Adblock Crew.
2. Restart Firefox.
3. Right-click on any ad then, depending on type, select either 'Adblock Iframe' or 'Adblock Image'. If an ad is Flash-based then an accompaning 'Adblock' tab will allow you to perform the block.
4. An address confirmation box will then appear allowing you to set either a specific block or a general wildcard-based block.
Beyond this, Adblock also supports filter importing. Take a look at this site for some pre-made filters.
For Safari ad blocking, take a look at the stylesheet usage prescribed at floopymoose.com.
Everyone else, take a look at this site for an explanation on how to use your system's host config to control ad displays.
